Had the pleasure of riding with a great rider from Walla Walla, Washington and helping her with her training for the Leadville 100. Joanne, who is 60 years young and has ridden in the epic race several years, likes to get to Colorado a few weeks in advance to get acclimated to the altitude of the Rocky Mountains. Coming from sea level, it would be very hard to go straight to riding 100 miles over 10,000 feet without getting the body prepared for the lack of oxygen. That’s why riding in Durango, which is at 6,500 feet, and going up over 7,000 feet for several hours really helps her prepare. We ended up covering over 20 miles with over 2,000 feet elevation gain. Good luck to Joanne and her efforts at the Leadville 100.
